So many people have asked me, ?Why dentistry???? It?s because I absolutely love it. It?s very fulfilling to be able to help create a smile and change someone?s life, or to take someone out of pain. Sure the simple fillings aren?t what makes me feel on top of the world, but they are still fun to do! Dentistry incorporates a level creativity, science, health, business, and interaction with people that I just gravitate towards. It involves more than just shots, drills, and fills. So how do you know dentistry is right for you?
If you are thinking about going into dentistry consider a few things:
- What do you want out of your career? Are you looking for a job where you help people or want to work for yourself? Do you love working with your hands?
- Make sure you love dentistry. Shadow at as many dental offices as you can. Pursuing a career that is not that right fit, can make you miserable. Don?t become a dentist for the wrong reasons, such as family expectations or because you think you?ll become wealthy. Pursue a career in dentistry because it?s something you are passionate about.
- Are you a people person? People skills are extremely important in this industry as our client base will either grow or shrink based on the customer service we give and your bedside manner. A dental professional?s job, no matter which position, is to ensure that patients are comfortable and confident that they are receiving excellent dental care.
- Are you artistic? Dentistry involves very precise handwork. Manual dexterity and attention to dental when working in a tiny area is crucial to dentistry.
The business side of dentistry:
Owning a business comes with a lot of headaches, and a lot of freedom all at the same time. As a woman, it?s nice to be able to work 3-4 days a week, still make a comfortable living, and organize your own schedule. Even if you work for somebody as an associate, you can still make a great living and you will avoid all the headaches of owning your own business.
