How To Pick The Right Major in College

How To Pick The Right Major in College

Well, I?m not going to lie when I say that I kind of followed in my older brother?s footsteps when I picked biology as a major! However, I knew I wanted to be in the dental field before I started Undergraduate School, so majoring in biology seemed like the thing to do since it already had the prerequisites to get into dental school within the major. Thankfully, I love science classes. But if science isn?t for you, and you are still looking to be in the dentistry, don?t worry?you don?t have to major in science!

You should major in something that excites you, something you want to learn more about! Remember that the major you choose will neither predict nor guarantee your future. Of course if you plan on being in the dental field after college, then you will have to take prerequisite courses that include science classes (check with each school what those prerequisite courses are), but not all your classes need to be science related. Actually, dental schools sometimes prefer students that are well-rounded, different, and didn?t major in science.

If you truly have no idea what you want to study, that’s okay?many schools don’t require students to declare a major until sophomore year.? Keep in mind that when applying to professional school, your GPA is definitely important. So if you study something that you love, you?re more likely to fully engage with your classes. This can mean that you will have better grades, and better relationships with the professors (which you can later ask for letters of rec). Don’t major in something because of the noise coming from family, friends, and society.

College is a major investment, and it should pay you back. It should teach you the things you want to learn that can help you in your future. So, major in what you want to learn more about. If you have an interest, follow that interest! It may become your passion!
