What is Laser Dentistry?
At The Center for Restorative & Cosmetic Dentistry, one of the best investments we’ve made for our Newport Beach patients is in state-of-the-art technology like the Biolase dental laser.
How do Lasers Work?
Lasers like Biolase use light energy that is amplified into a tiny beam of power. While there are a number of different types of lasers on the market, Biolase is a diode laser that offers best-in-class accuracy and performance in the dental care industry.
Biolase’s non-invasive light energy offers pain-free and therapeutic procedures with our gentle dentist, Dr. Desiree Yazdan. While dental lasers offer a number of different capabilities, here are some of the most common types of treatments that you can choose from with this type of equipment:
Drill Free Fillings
Looking for a gentle dentist that offers drill-free fillings? With Biolase, you don’t have to go far! Light power allows us to perform minimally-invasive restorations that maximize your healthy tooth structure. When you want a pain-free treatment, dental lasers make it possible to get your filling without any drilling or injections.
Since Dr. Yazdan screens for cavities at their earliest stages, Biolase can remove the cavity before it has spread deeper into your tooth structure. You’ll enjoy smaller restorations and a comfortable appointment when it’s time for your filling!
Gum Disease Treatment
Biolase dental lasers are a non-invasive treatment for managing periodontal disease. If you’re seeing us for a deep cleaning (periodontal scaling and root planing) ask if Biolase can be combined with your soft tissue therapy.
When used in conjunction with your cleaning, Biolase kills the diseased gum tissue cells inside of infected pockets, without damaging the healthy tissues around them. The procedure (sometimes referred to as “LANAP” depending on which dentist you’re seeing) can help speed your recovery time and response to treatment.
This dental laser treatment isn’t an option for everyone, so be sure to discuss it with us ahead of time.
Cold Sore Treatment
Do you feel the early tingling signs of a cold sore popping up on your lip? Call our laser dental office immediately. We’ll see you for a quick 15-minute visit.
With Biolase, we’ll use gentle laser treatment on the area where you feel your cold sore developing – even if it’s not visible yet. The key is to catch it early. If we use Biolase within the first day or two of you getting a cold sore, you can cut your recovery time in half.
Gum Recontouring
Biolase lasers allow us to adjust your soft oral tissues without painful, invasive oral surgery. Instead, we can create a new contour of your gumlines to reveal fuller, healthy tooth structure that enhances your smile’s appearance.
Gum contouring is great if you have uneven gumlines, excess tissue from hormones or medication, or have a “short” tooth that needs a crown.
The entire procedure can be completed with or without local anesthetic, and doesn’t require any recovery time. You’ll be back to your normal routine in no time.
Wisdom Tooth Extractions
Sometimes, wisdom teeth are impacted or partially erupted, meaning that only a portion of the tooth is visible. With lasers, we can uncover the third molar without the bleeding and swelling you see with a typical incision. As a result, you have a faster recovery!
Sleep Apnea Treatments
In some specialty clinics, you’ll see oral surgeons or dental experts use soft tissue lasers to manage conditions related to obstructive sleep apnea and snoring. The laser allows them to reduce the amount of excessive tissue at the back of the patient’s throat, enlarging the airway to increase oxygen flow while they’re sleeping.
Are Lasers Pain Free?
Biolase lasers can be adjusted to a variety of tissues, ranging from soft tissue gingiva (gums) to hard enamel. They’re safe and FDA-approved for use in dental offices across the United States.
One of the main reasons why we use laser in our Newport Beach practice is because they allow us to offer gentle, pain-free services to patients of all ages. Whether you’re seeing us for a smile makeover, or your child needs a filling, Biolase makes it predictable to offer a positive experience to everyone who walks through our front doors!
Since Biolase usually doesn’t require local anesthetic, you can avoid having any types of injections. But if you still feel a little nervous, gentle nitrous oxide sedation is a great way to help you relax.
